The Commandments

Gospel MT 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
I read today's gospel and just scrunch up my face.  I'm one of those people that see the necessity of having laws but at heart, I'm a free-spirited rule-breaker.  I'm the one to see just how far I can go without breaking the law, how far I can push the boundaries of a commandment.  How does this mentality play out in my spirituality?  Am I playing with fire?  Dear Lord, thank you for the reminder today that you are calling me to obey and teach your commandments, down to the smallest part of a letter.  It's not easy for me, I know.  Help me to keep your commandments joyfully!
